General Storybooks:

International Children’s Digital Library: A repository of children’s books from around the world. The library’s main collection, for ages 3 – 13, contains books that focus on the global community. The library also features a number of special collections of historical children’s material.

Children’s Books Forever: Here, you can download the Tyrone the dinosaur series by Hans Wilhelm, and several other books.

Complete Library of Children’s Books Online: Many of the titles here were first published in the early 1900s. Lots of stuff here, including ABC picture books, nursery rhymes, fairy tales, fables and legends, history books, and classic stories such as Black Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, and Gulliver’s Travels. The books have lots of nice illustrations.


Speakaboos: Animated storybooks that are read aloud. Stories are broken into several categories: Scary Stories (eg. they have a version of Frankenstein);  Fairy Tales;  stories about transportation (most are about space); Sports Stories; Food Stories; Animal Stories; ABCs and 123s; Nursery Rhymes; Adventure Stories; and stories told as sing-alongs.

We Give Books: Features classics, like Peter Rabbit and Madeline; newer titles, like the Skippyjon Jones series, and a variety of non-fiction DK Readers. Books can be searched by age range, genre, and author.

Reading Units: This site has study activities to use with a variety of novels, including The Call of the Wild; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; The City of Ember; The Giver; Holes; and a number of others.

Myths; Fables; Legends:

Library of Congress Interactive Aesop’s Fables: Over 140 classic fables with original illustrations updated with animation.

Grimm Fairy Tales: Option to hear the stories read, or read them yourself. Kids can also play games based on stories.

Myths and Legends: Most of the stories on this site are from around England, but also include tales from other parts of the world. You can read the story or listen to it, access a story’s origins, and get teaching ideas for the stories. There’s also a story creator so you can tell your own tales.

Long Long Time Ago: Stories for Children: Fables, folktales, fairytales, myths;  a section that tells the stories behind some well-known nursery rhymes, and a couple of tales from history: King Robert of Scotland, and Ashoka, great emperor of India.

The Arabian Nights:  Presented by the Electronic Literature Foundation. Over 30 tales here, including Aladdin, and the Seven Voyages of Sinbad.


MysteryNet’s Kid’s Mysteries: Read short stories and try to solve the mysteries. Also includes lesson plans for teaching critical reading with mysteries.
